Aciclovir

Cream, 50 mg/g

One gram of cream contains the active substance aciclovir 50 mg.

Excipients with known effect: propylene glycol, cetostearyl alcohol. Other excipients: white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin, glyceryl stearate and PEG-100 stearate, poloxamer 407, dimeticone, sodium lauryl sulfate, purified water.

An antiviral medicine for the skin treatment of herpes simplex virus infections, including cold sores (labial herpes) and genital herpes, both initial and recurrent. It can be used in adults and children of all ages.

Aciclovir enters the cells infected with the herpes virus, where it is converted into an active form that blocks the multiplication of the virus without harming healthy cells. In this way it halts the development of herpes lesions.

Apply to the skin (external use). Treatment should be started as early as possible, preferably at the first signs (tingling, itching, redness), but it may also be started later (when blisters appear).

Apply the cream to the affected area or where lesions are expected 5 times a day, at intervals of about 4 hours. Continue treatment for at least 4 days for cold sores and 5 days for genital herpes; if healing does not occur, it may be extended to up to 10 days. Wash your hands before and after applying.

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to aciclovir, valaciclovir or to any of its excipients.

Important to know

The cream is for application to the skin only. Do not apply it to mucous membranes (mouth, eyes, vagina), as this may cause irritation, and avoid contact with the eyes. The medicine contains propylene glycol (which may cause skin irritation) and cetostearyl alcohol (which may cause local skin reactions, for example contact dermatitis).

Patients with severely reduced immunity (for example with HIV/AIDS or a bone marrow transplant) should consult a doctor, as oral treatment may be needed. With topical use, absorption into the body is very low, so the cream may be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding if your doctor considers it necessary. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Possible side effects

Uncommon: transient burning, tingling or stinging immediately after application, dry or flaking skin, itching.

Rare: redness, contact dermatitis (more often due to the excipients than to aciclovir itself). Very rare: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema and urticaria.

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Store below 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
