Semisolid Dosage Forms: advantages and applications

Discover the advantages of semisolid forms and why they are preferred in certain treatments.

Semisolid Dosage Forms: Advantages and Applications

Semisolid dosage forms — creams, gels, ointments — offer multiple therapeutic advantages. Local application allows high concentrations of the active substance directly at the affected site and can limit systemic exposure when treatment is intended for skin or mucosal areas.

Creams are light emulsions, easily absorbed, ideal for superficial dermatological conditions. They spread evenly, usually leave a less greasy feel and are suitable for areas where the patient prefers a discreet texture.

Gels usually have a water-based or hydroalcoholic base, provide a cooling sensation on application, and are absorbed quickly without leaving a greasy film. They are suitable for hairy areas and for situations where a light, non-occlusive texture is preferred.

Ointments have a greasy base, providing additional hydration and long-term skin protection. They can create a protective film and are often chosen for dry, thickened areas.

Correct application starts with clean, dry skin. In general, the product is applied in a thin layer, without aggressive rubbing, and hands are washed after use unless the hands are the treated area.

Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth or other mucosal areas unless the product is intended for those sites. Occlusive dressings, application over large surfaces or prolonged use should be done only according to medical advice.

The choice of form depends on the condition, location, skin status and patient preferences. From a quality perspective, the formulation must remain stable, homogeneous and easy to apply throughout its shelf life.
