COMPOSITION
Each suppository contains the active substance meloxicam 7.5 mg or 15 mg, depending on the strength.
Excipient: semi-synthetic solid glycerides.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR
A non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic effects. It is used for:
short-term symptomatic treatment of pain in flare-ups of osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease);
long-term symptomatic treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis.
HOW IT WORKS
Meloxicam reduces the production of prostaglandins, substances involved in inflammation, pain and fever, thereby relieving pain, inflammation and joint stiffness. It is not intended for the treatment of acute pain.
HOW TO USE
Administered rectally, once a day. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time.
osteoarthritis flare-up: 7.5 mg a day; if needed, the dose may be increased to 15 mg a day;
rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis: 15 mg a day; depending on response, the dose may be reduced to 7.5 mg a day;
elderly patients, patients at increased risk or with severe renal failure (on dialysis): 7.5 mg a day.
Do not exceed 15 mg a day. Not for use in children and adolescents under 16 years.
WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED
hypersensitivity to meloxicam, to other NSAIDs or to acetylsalicylic acid (including asthma, nasal polyps, urticaria or angioedema after taking them);
active gastric or duodenal ulcer, or a history of recurrent ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding/perforation;
bleeding (gastrointestinal, cerebrovascular or other);
active inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis);
severe hepatic, renal (in non-dialysis patients) or cardiac failure;
the third trimester of pregnancy;
children and adolescents under 16 years.
Important to know
NSAIDs can cause gastrointestinal bleeding, ulcers or perforation, sometimes without warning signs; the risk increases with dose, in the elderly and in those with a history of ulcer. Long-term use at high doses may be associated with a slightly increased risk of heart attack or stroke. Stop treatment and consult a doctor if abdominal pain, black stools, skin rash or signs of allergy occur.
Tell your doctor if you take anticoagulants, other NSAIDs, corticosteroids, diuretics, blood pressure medicines, lithium or methotrexate. Use with caution in patients with hypertension, heart disease, kidney or liver disorders. Not recommended for women planning to become pregnant; in the first two trimesters of pregnancy, use only if strictly necessary. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.
Possible side effects
Common: digestive disturbances (dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, flatulence), headache.
Uncommon: dizziness, drowsiness, gastrointestinal bleeding, gastritis, skin rash, itching, oedema, raised blood pressure, changes in liver or kidney tests.
Rare or very rare: ulcer and gastrointestinal perforation, severe allergic reactions, serious skin reactions, blood disorders, liver or kidney damage.
If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.
STORAGE
Store below 25 °C in the original packaging. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
