Patient information

Povidone-iodine

Overview

Povidone-iodine

Ovules, 200 mg

COMPOSITION

Each ovule contains the active substance povidone-iodine 200 mg.

Excipient: macrogol 1000.

WHAT IT IS USED FOR

A broad-spectrum vaginal antiseptic (antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral). It is used for:

treatment of acute and chronic vaginitis caused by mixed or nonspecific infections (bacterial vaginosis due to Gardnerella vaginalis), fungal infections or Trichomonas vaginalis;

treatment of vaginal infections arising after antibiotic or corticosteroid therapy;

prevention before surgical or diagnostic procedures in the vagina.

HOW IT WORKS

Povidone-iodine gradually releases iodine, which rapidly penetrates micro-organisms and destroys them. It covers a broad spectrum of bacteria, fungi and viruses, with no development of resistance.

HOW TO USE

For vaginal use, in the evening before bedtime. Remove the ovule from its packaging, moisten it with water and insert it deep into the vagina. Moistening with water is important to ensure full dissolution of the active substance and to prevent local irritation.

mild infections: 1 ovule a day for 7 days; if needed, treatment may be extended by a further 7 days;

persistent infections: 1 ovule twice a day, as directed by your doctor.

Do not stop treatment during menstruation; the use of sanitary towels is recommended. The ovule must not be warmed before use.

WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED

hypersensitivity to povidone-iodine, to iodine or to the excipient;

thyroid disorders;

before, during or after radioactive iodine scintigraphy or treatment (an interval of at least 1–2 weeks);

dermatitis herpetiformis (Duhring's disease);

pregnancy and breast-feeding;

girls who have not reached adolescence.

Important to know

Stop treatment if irritation, contact dermatitis or hypersensitivity reactions occur. Large amounts of iodine may affect thyroid function; in patients with thyroid disorders, caution and medical monitoring are needed. Use with caution with regular use in chronic renal failure.

Povidone-iodine may have a spermicidal effect and is not recommended for women planning a pregnancy. It may reduce the effectiveness of other topical antiseptics and may give false-positive results in some tests (occult blood in stool/urine, glucose in urine). Avoid contact with jewellery, especially silver items. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Possible side effects

Rare: hypersensitivity reactions, contact dermatitis (erythema, small blisters, itching).

Very rare or frequency not known: anaphylactic reaction, angioedema, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, electrolyte imbalance, metabolic acidosis, kidney impairment (with prolonged use of large amounts of iodine).

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

STORAGE

Store below 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
