Micometrin
Overview
Micometrin
Ovules, 225 mg/100 mg/75 mg/0.5 mg
COMPOSITION
Each ovule contains the active substances metronidazole 225 mg, chloramphenicol 100 mg, nystatin 75 mg and dexamethasone acetate 0.5 mg.
Excipient: semi-synthetic solid glycerides.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR
A combination medicine with antibacterial, antifungal, antiprotozoal and anti-inflammatory action for vaginal use. It is used to treat bacterial vaginosis, bacterial, trichomonal, fungal (Candida) or mixed vaginitis, and to prevent vaginal superinfection before and after gynaecological procedures and surgery, and during treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, cytostatics or antibiotics.
In trichomonal infections, an oral antitrichomonal treatment is given at the same time to achieve complete cure.
HOW IT WORKS
The four components act in a complementary way: metronidazole kills protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, nystatin acts against Candida fungi, and dexamethasone acetate (a corticosteroid) reduces local inflammation, quickly easing discomfort.
HOW TO USE
Administered vaginally, 1 ovule a day, in the evening before bedtime, inserted deep into the vagina. The treatment course is 10–12 days.
In trichomonal vaginitis, if needed, the local treatment may be extended by a further 10–12 days, with oral metronidazole taken at the same time. To prevent re-infection, simultaneous treatment of the partner is recommended. Not for use in people under 18 years.
WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED
hypersensitivity to metronidazole, chloramphenicol, nystatin, dexamethasone acetate or to any of the excipients;
bone marrow suppression;
acute intermittent porphyria;
glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency;
hepatic and/or renal failure;
pregnancy;
breast-feeding;
age under 18 years.
Important to know
During treatment and for 24–48 hours afterwards, avoid alcohol (risk of a disulfiram-like reaction: flushing, nausea, palpitations). With prolonged treatment your doctor may order blood tests.
Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment. The ovules may reduce the effectiveness of latex or rubber condoms, diaphragms and spermicides; use other contraceptive measures during treatment and for 5 days afterwards. To prevent re-infection, simultaneous treatment of the partner is recommended. Metronidazole may darken the colour of the urine (a harmless effect). If dizziness, drowsiness or vision disturbances occur, do not drive or operate machinery. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.
