Ovules, 500 mg
COMPOSITION
Each ovule contains the active substance metronidazole 500 mg.
Excipient: semi-synthetic solid glycerides.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR
A medicine for the local treatment of vaginal trichomoniasis and bacterial (nonspecific) vaginitis caused by susceptible micro-organisms. It is intended for adult patients.
HOW IT WORKS
Metronidazole kills protozoa (including Trichomonas vaginalis) and the anaerobic bacteria responsible for the infection, acting locally on the vaginal lining.
HOW TO USE
For vaginal use, 1 ovule a day, inserted deep into the vagina.
vaginal trichomoniasis: 1 ovule a day for 10 days, combined with an oral treatment;
nonspecific vaginitis: 1 ovule a day for 7 days, combined with an oral treatment if needed.
The partner should be treated at the same time, even without signs of infection. Treatment should not exceed 10 days and should not be repeated more than 2–3 times a year.
WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED
hypersensitivity to metronidazole, other imidazole derivatives or to any of the excipients;
alcohol consumption or concurrent use of disulfiram.
Important to know
Do not drink alcohol or take medicines containing alcohol during treatment and for 48 hours after it ends (risk of a disulfiram-like reaction: facial flushing, vomiting, palpitations). With prolonged treatment your doctor may order blood tests.
Use with caution in patients with blood-forming disorders or nervous system diseases. Stop treatment and consult a doctor if ataxia, dizziness, confusion or severe skin rash occur. Metronidazole may darken the colour of the urine (a harmless effect) and may increase the risk of condoms or diaphragms tearing. If drowsiness, dizziness or vision disturbances occur, do not drive or operate machinery. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.
Possible side effects
Side effects are rare at the usual doses, as absorption into the body after vaginal use is low.
Possible: metallic taste, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, Candida superinfection; very rarely allergic reactions, blood, nervous system or liver disorders, or severe skin reactions.
If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.
STORAGE
Store below 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
