Overview

Metromicon

Ovules, 100 mg/100 mg

COMPOSITION

Each ovule contains the active substances metronidazole 100 mg and miconazole nitrate 100 mg.

Excipient: semi-synthetic solid glycerides.

WHAT IT IS USED FOR

A combination medicine for the local treatment of trichomoniasis and/or fungal infections of the genital organs in women, and for the prevention of genital fungal infections. Metronidazole acts against trichomonads, while miconazole acts against fungi (Candida).

HOW IT WORKS

The two substances complement each other: metronidazole kills protozoa and some bacteria, while miconazole nitrate has an antifungal action and is locally effective against Candida fungi.

HOW TO USE

For vaginal use only. Insert 1 ovule a day (in the evening, before bedtime) as deeply as possible, for 10 consecutive days.

For trichomoniasis, the vaginal treatment must be combined with oral metronidazole as prescribed by the doctor; for lasting cure, simultaneous treatment of the partner is recommended. If treatment is not effective, the 10-day course may be repeated. Not for use in children and adolescents.

WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED

hypersensitivity to metronidazole, miconazole nitrate or to any of the excipients;

the first trimester of pregnancy.

Important to know

During treatment and for at least one day after it ends, avoid alcohol and medicines containing alcohol (risk of a disulfiram-like reaction: nausea, vomiting, headache, facial flushing). Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment.

In the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, use only as advised by your doctor. Stop treatment if irritation or hypersensitivity reactions of the vaginal lining occur. Metronidazole may darken the colour of the urine (a harmless effect). Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Possible side effects

Local: occasional irritation or burning; rarely hypersensitivity reactions.

When combined with oral metronidazole the following may occur: nausea, abdominal pain or cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, unpleasant taste, skin rash; rarely blood disorders, severe allergic reactions or liver damage.

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

STORAGE

Store below 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
