Overview

Levometrin

Ovules, 225 mg/100 mg/75 mg

COMPOSITION

Each ovule contains the active substances metronidazole 225 mg, chloramphenicol 100 mg and nystatin 75 mg.

Excipient: semi-synthetic solid glycerides.

WHAT IT IS USED FOR

A combination medicine with antibacterial, antifungal and antiprotozoal action for vaginal use. It is used to treat bacterial, trichomonal, fungal or mixed vaginitis caused by susceptible micro-organisms, and to prevent vaginal superinfection before and after gynaecological procedures and surgery, and during treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, cytostatics or antibiotics.

In trichomonal infections, an oral antitrichomonal treatment is given at the same time to achieve complete cure.

HOW IT WORKS

The three components act in a complementary way: metronidazole kills protozoa and anaerobic bacteria, chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and nystatin acts against Candida fungi. Together they cover the common, including mixed, causes of vaginal infections.

HOW TO USE

Administered vaginally, usually in the evening before bedtime.

acute vaginitis: 1 ovule twice a day (morning and evening) for 3–4 days, then 1 ovule in the evening; treatment course 7–10 days;

chronic vaginal infections: 1 ovule a day in the evening for 14 days;

before and after gynaecological procedures and surgery: 1 ovule in the evening;

preventively during treatment with corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, cytostatics or antibiotics: 1 ovule in the evening, every 3–7 days.

Not recommended for people under 18 years of age.

WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED

hypersensitivity to metronidazole, chloramphenicol, nystatin or to any of the excipients;

bone marrow suppression;

acute intermittent porphyria;

glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency;

hepatic and/or renal failure;

pregnancy;

breast-feeding;

age under 18 years.

Important to know

During treatment and for 24–48 hours afterwards, avoid alcohol (risk of a disulfiram-like reaction: flushing, nausea, palpitations). With prolonged treatment your doctor may order blood tests.

Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment. The ovules may reduce the effectiveness of latex or rubber condoms, diaphragms and spermicides; use other contraceptive measures during treatment and for 5 days afterwards. To prevent re-infection, simultaneous treatment of the partner is recommended. Metronidazole may darken the colour of the urine (a harmless effect). If dizziness, drowsiness or vision disturbances occur, do not drive or operate machinery. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Rare or very rare: blood disorders (reduced blood cell counts), allergic reactions (including severe), neurological disturbances (dizziness, headache, seizures, encephalopathy), psychiatric disturbances, metallic taste, nausea, liver damage, serious skin reactions.

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.
