Ointment, 0.64 mg/30 mg/g
COMPOSITION
One gram of ointment contains the active substances betamethasone dipropionate 0.64 mg and salicylic acid 30 mg.
Excipients: liquid paraffin, white soft paraffin.
WHAT IT IS USED FOR
A combination ointment pairing a potent corticosteroid (betamethasone) with a keratolytic agent (salicylic acid), for the relief of inflammatory signs of hyperkeratotic and dry dermatoses responsive to corticosteroids: psoriasis, chronic atopic dermatitis, neurodermatitis, lichen planus, eczema (nummular, palmar, eczematous dermatitis), dyshidrosis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, ichthyosis and other ichthyosiform conditions.
HOW IT WORKS
Salicylic acid softens and removes the thickened horny layers of the skin (keratolytic effect), facilitating penetration of betamethasone. Betamethasone reduces inflammation, redness and itching. The combined action is particularly effective in hyperkeratotic dermatoses.
HOW TO USE
Apply a thin layer to the entire affected area, massaging gently, twice a day (morning and evening) for 2 weeks. The maximum weekly dose must not exceed 60 g. In maintenance treatment, once-daily application is sufficient.
Children: treatment must not exceed 5 days. Do not use occlusive dressings. Do not apply to the face or inflamed skin for longer than necessary (no more than 5 days). Stop treatment if excessive dryness or irritation occurs.
WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED
hypersensitivity to betamethasone, salicylic acid or to any of the excipients;
acne vulgaris or rosacea; perioral dermatitis;
perianal and genital itching; nappy rash;
bacterial, viral, parasitic or fungal skin infections;
vaccination skin reactions; ulcerative lesions.
Important to know
Do not use occlusive dressings: salicylic acid increases betamethasone absorption, raising the risk of systemic effects. Do not apply to large areas for long periods: adrenal axis suppression may occur (Cushing’s syndrome, especially in children). Long-term use in psoriasis carries risks of rebound and generalised pustular psoriasis. Avoid contact with the eyes; if vision disturbances occur (blurred vision), consult an ophthalmologist (risk of cataract, glaucoma).
Prolonged application of salicylic acid may cause salicylism (tinnitus, nausea, dizziness). Avoid during pregnancy; brief use on a small area is acceptable only as directed by a doctor. The decision on breast-feeding should be made with the doctor. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.
Possible side effects
Local: burning sensation, itching, irritation, dry skin, folliculitis, acne-like eruptions, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, contact dermatitis.
With prolonged continuous use: skin atrophy, stretch marks, superficial vasodilation (especially on the face); with occlusive dressings: maceration, secondary infections, atrophy, miliaria.
Frequency not known: blurred vision.
If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.
STORAGE
Store below 25 °C. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
