Active substances:

chloramphenicol 7.5 mg, methyluracil 40 mg

Patient information

Cloromicol

Overview

Ointment, 7.5 mg/40 mg/g

COMPOSITION

One gram of ointment contains the active substances chloramphenicol 7.5 mg and methyluracil 40 mg.

Excipients: macrogol 400, macrogol 1500.

WHAT IT IS USED FOR

A combination medicine for external use, used in the treatment of purulent wounds (including those infected with mixed microflora), to cleanse the wound of necrotic and purulent material and to reduce swelling in the first phase of the healing process (the suppurative-necrotic phase).

HOW IT WORKS

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth. Methyluracil stimulates cell regeneration, tissue granulation and epithelialisation, improving wound healing. Macrogol helps to dehydrate the wound and enhances the action of the active substances. The presence of necrotic and purulent material does not reduce the antibacterial activity of the product.

HOW TO USE

For external use on wounds only, by or under the direction of medical staff:

•

the ointment is applied to sterile gauze wicks, which are then loosely inserted into the wound;

•

in purulent cavities it may be introduced through a catheter (drain) using a syringe – in this case the ointment is warmed to 35–36 °C beforehand.

The procedure is repeated daily until the wound is completely cleared of necrotic and purulent material. The maximum daily dose, calculated in terms of chloramphenicol, must not exceed 3 g. The duration of treatment depends on the severity and course of the condition. Not for use in children under 2 years.

WHEN IT SHOULD NOT BE USED

•

hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol, methyluracil or to any of the excipients;

•

pregnancy and breast-feeding;

•

children under 2 years of age.

Important to know

Avoid contact of the ointment with the eyes and mucous membranes. If hypersensitivity reactions or irritation occur, stop treatment and consult a doctor.

Use with caution in patients with renal or hepatic impairment (dose reduction is recommended). During treatment, breast-feeding should be stopped or the medicine discontinued. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Possible side effects

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.
