Benzyl Benzoate

Cream, 200 mg/g

Each gram of cream contains the active substance benzyl benzoate 200 mg.

Excipients with known effect: methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), bronopol. Other excipients: polysorbate 80, carbomer 980, sodium hydroxide, purified water.

An antiparasitic medicine (scabicide) for the treatment of scabies – a skin disease caused by a mite. Benzyl benzoate penetrates the body of the mites and destroys them, and also has a mild local anaesthetic effect.

Benzyl benzoate acts on the scabies mite: it penetrates the mite's outer layer, builds up in its body to toxic levels and kills the adult parasites and larvae. It does not act on the eggs, which is why treatment must be repeated according to the schedule.

Apply to the skin (external use). For each application, use 10–15 g of cream, rubbing it into previously washed skin over the whole body, except the face and head.

Apply the cream first to the palms and hands, then to the rest of the body from top to bottom, and lastly to the legs, soles and between the toes. On sensitive areas (groin, genitals, breasts) and in case of eczema, dermatitis or lesions, apply gently, without rubbing, avoiding the eyes and mucous membranes.

Do not wash your hands for 3 hours after applying; if you wash your hands sooner, reapply the cream to your hands. The body may be washed after 3 days. After each application, change your underwear, bed linen and clothes.

Schedule: apply the cream 4 times over 2 weeks, at intervals of 3–4 days. An average of 60–90 g is used per course. Not for use in children under 3 years.

Important to know

Before first use, test your skin sensitivity by applying a small amount of cream to a small area. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. On application a stinging sensation may occur that disappears within a few minutes; if it persists, remove the cream from the skin.

The medicine contains bronopol (which may cause local skin reactions, for example contact dermatitis), methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218) and propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), which may cause allergic reactions (even delayed ones). During pregnancy, use only after your doctor weighs the benefit against the risk; during treatment, breast-feeding is stopped and may be resumed after the cream is removed from the skin. Possible side effects

Frequency not known: contact dermatitis, allergic skin reactions, irritation, a painful burning sensation.

Skin sensitivity increases if the surface is damaged or if the cream reaches the genital mucosa.

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Store below 25 °C. Do not freeze. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 36 months.
