Aciclovir Duo

Cream, 50 mg/g + 10 mg/g

One gram of cream contains the active substances aciclovir 50 mg and hydrocortisone 10 mg.

Excipients with known effect: cetostearyl alcohol, sodium lauryl sulfate, propylene glycol. Other excipients: isopropyl myristate, white soft paraffin, liquid paraffin, poloxamer 188, citric acid monohydrate, sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, purified water.

A combination medicine that pairs an antiviral (aciclovir) with an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid (hydrocortisone). It is used at the first signs and symptoms of recurrent cold sores (labial herpes), to stop the eruption from progressing to ulcerative lesions. It is intended for adults and adolescents aged 12 years and over with normal immunity.

Aciclovir stops the herpes virus from multiplying, while hydrocortisone reduces local inflammation. Together, the two substances slow the progression of the cold sore and relieve the signs and symptoms more quickly.

Apply to the skin only. Start treatment as early as possible, preferably right at the first signs (tingling, itching, redness).

Apply the cream 5 times a day, at intervals of about 3–4 hours during the day (not at night), for 5 days. At each application use enough cream to cover the affected area, including the outer edge of the lesion. Do not use for more than 5 days. If the lesions persist, consult a doctor. Wash your hands before and after applying, and avoid touching or rubbing the lesions. Not for use in children under 12 years.

Important to know

Apply the cream only to the lips and the skin around the lips. Do not apply it to mucous membranes (eyes, inside the mouth or nose, genital area) and do not use it for genital herpes; avoid contact with the eyes. Do not cover the area with dressings or plasters, and do not use for more than 5 days. If vision disturbances occur (for example blurred vision), consult a doctor.

Not recommended for people with reduced immunity, who should consult a doctor. The medicine contains cetostearyl alcohol and sodium lauryl sulfate (which may cause local skin reactions, for example stinging, burning or contact dermatitis) and propylene glycol (which may cause irritation). During pregnancy, use only if necessary; during breast-feeding, only if strictly necessary, as directed by your doctor. Read the package leaflet carefully before use.

Possible side effects

Common: dry or flaking skin.

Uncommon: transient burning, tingling or stinging immediately after application, itching. Rare: redness, pigmentation changes, contact dermatitis (more often due to hydrocortisone or the excipients than to aciclovir itself).

Very rare: hypersensitivity reactions, including angioedema. Frequency not known: blurred vision.

If side effects occur, stop using the product and consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Store below 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children. Shelf life: 24 months. After first opening the tube, use within 3 months.
